Epic!Fail Reviews – SPN - 5X01: AKA: “Oh thank God, the angels are here.” (REDUX)

I wasn't happy with the other review, so here's a new one. Much longer.

Well, wowzers Scoob, we’re back again with a whole new season of Supernatural. Boy that hiatus sure was fun wasn’t it; with all the fan wank and the gaining new hatred of Castiel. Guess it really isn’t a hiatus without someone bitching. Truly the show has returned. Now, I must admit, my expectations for this episode, and the season as a whole were very, very low. Like six feet under. And let me just shoot the biggest elephant in the room as to why I didn’t like last season, Ruby. No, I don’t hate Genieve Cortese at all. She was a fine actress on that horse show. But between her and the writers neutering her character, well, it was a total fail season. Sure, Castiel was okay towards the end, but overall, the season left me wanting more.

So with this season starting up, I wasn’t hyping myself up like last season. This time around, instead of being all bouncy and eating some high amounts of sugar, I drank a beer and enjoyed the show.

First off, at eight o’clock was The Vampire Diaries. Wow the marketing people over at the CW are idiots. “Well, we’ve got a show about two hot brothers fighting monsters. How about we get a show with two hot monster brothers who fight over a girl. Yeah, these chicks will eat that shit up!”

My review on that show is pretty much this: it doesn’t suck nearly as bad as Twilight, but then again being tortured by Jigsaw while listening to Heidi Montag on loop is better than Twilight.

So Supernatural begins, and the song for the montage of doom is Thunderstruck by ACDC. Enjoy while you can folks because I’m pretty sure this will be the last classic rock song we hear for awhile on this show. Damn you Gossip Girl and your ridiculously over priced wardrobe.

The montage ends and we start off where we left off last season. Sam and Dean are staring like two morons at the big glowy explosion. Finally they realize that it might be a good idea to run, but oh noes, the door slams shut. Wait a sec, I thought Ruby was dead. Actually that’s something that bugged me. Where’s Ruby body? Did she conveniently turn to dust? Oh well, that’s just a small thing.

The light gets even brighter, if that is even possible, and I’m beginning to realize that good God this show is freakin dark about ninety-nine percent of the time. Sort of like my bedroom. Then, just if this couldn’t get any worse, that stupid Mariah Carey CD starts up again. Dear God, Kripke I know you really want to mess with the fans, but this is just damn cruel. So, at this point I’m thinking, oh crap, Satan is Mariah Carey and wondering if she’s really going to eat Sam and Dean, in more ways than one. ZING! But then poof, the light explodes and we’re now on a plane, for some reason. Now why in the Hell would they get transported there? Doesn’t that seem a bit mean to Dean. Lets see, we want to mess with Dean, how to torture him more? We already had him betrayed by his brother, and failing to stop Lucifer, I know, lets stick his ass on a plane and have it almost crash Lost style. Perfect.

The cut was also a lot of fun too. Hi Looney Tunes! I miss you guys. Takes me back to when cartoons used to be good. Also their version of Satan, pretty damn accurate I gotta tell ya. And then the episode’s over. Well, that was a short… nope, now we have new credit sequence. And this one is all bloody.

I would like to take the chance to point out something, in the first season, the title card was blue and black, the next one was flames, the one was black and purple and then season four and five was white and red. Pretty cool huh?

Now we’re in a car, and the boys are of course driving and not talking, because you know, that’s healthy. They try to find some good ole rock music on the radio, but sadly, since the budget demon attacked, no music. Dean, yet again, mentions a movie (Soul Plane) and I wonder, yet again, when in the Hell does he have time to watch all these movies, especially real shitty ones. They need to find Castiel and figure out what’s going on. Why Castiel? Because the plot says so.

Dean and Sam show up at Chuck’s house, and apparently the guy had been partying it up Jersey style because his house is trashed. Why can’t arch angels just kill and leave the fresh scent of pine behind. Be a little more considerate when it comes to destroying things kay? Chuck also gets to hit Sam, something I’ve been wanting to do since Heaven and Fail. Dean gets yet another surprise when Chuck mentions Sammy’s eyes going all creepy. I’m with Sam on this, how would he know? There wasn’t a mirror or anything so he couldn’t look at how awesome he was while kicking Lilth’s ass. Though knowing him he would so totally pose in front of it Bateman style. Although that does bring up something, can people, or demons, feel their eyes going black?

Chuck tells them that Castiel got blown up Cajun style. I wonder what a balloon filled with chunky soup looks like. Looks like I gots a project to do in the next few days. Here’s hoping it goes viral on you tube.

I’ll give it up to the actor who plays Chuck. I wasn’t thrilled with his character being introduced, me being against all forms of prophecy crap. But he’s grown on me with his pathecticness.

Zachariah shows up and Dean slings slurs at him that make me sad this show isn’t on Showtime. You know Dean would call him a cock sucker. I like that Sam says meat suit. If I remember correctly wasn’t that one of Ruby’s sayings?

Zachariah said boy wrong, by the by, you have to add a Southern flare and add a syllable.

But Dean decides its time for painting class and sends the angels packing. This is something that while watching the episode still confuses me. How did Dean have time to draw the whole thing in blood? At first I thought, okay they’ve been at Chuck’s house for a long time, but they had only just walked in. Does that mean Chuck knew and drew it and then Dean just got the thing to work? I’m not so much questioning how Dean got it to work, although I did think only angels could do that. Unless Castiel did it before he popped like a zit.

And now the boys are at a shitty motel, yippie. The walls are especially ugly, although I did like the lights in the room. Sam’s got some hex bags and admits that Ruby taught him how to make them. On the one hand, I’m thinking bad idea to bring up miss Hell bitch in front of his brother, on the other, at least he isn’t lying. See, Sam is getting smart. Sort of. Dean asks him about his whole “are you jonsening for a fix” thing and Sam guesses that whoever sucked them into the plane cleaned him out.

And now we get to the whole talky thing. I like that Sam is trying to apologize, trying to smooth things over, but throughout the whole thing I’m just yelling “shut up Sam.” At this point, trying to apologize and trying to get Dean’s love back isn’t exactly the most important thing, you know with the whole Lucifer out walking around. And no, I don’t hate Sam. I am team Bobby this season, which means I get reign to bitch about the boys.

This is a pretty cool idea with Lucifer and his whole vessel thing. He is in fact an angel, not a demon, so he needs someone. And after Dean and Sam start trying to form a plan, we are introduced to the poor son-of-a-bitch who is to become Lucifer’s bitch. And who is this man you may ask? Why Nick of course. Lost fans may recognize him, I don’t, but then again, I never watched Lost. I feel bad for Nick and the actor convinces me that he is one poor bastard. He wakes up covered in blood and then the blood goes poof thanks to the editor and when he goes back to bed, bam, his wife! Oh no, did he kill her? We’ll get back to that.

Cut to… Oh good God. A fangirl. All right, I know I should be able to take a joke, and believe me she is funny and the actress is awesome, but man, I am feeling uncomfortable. Congrats Kripke you almost make me want to delete all my porn fic. But not quite. I love the bad fic and I love the fact that’s she speaking as she’s writing. I’m sorry, I don’t do that, does anyone else? She is one freaky fangirl. She makes me feel better about my fangirlness. I don’t write a website and I’ve never sent marzipan to anyone. I love her whole “I knew it!” If Kripke called and told me everything was real, I’d probably wonder how much pot I had consumed in the past few days. And then wonder how he got my number and go into a paranoid state of depression for awhile.

Becky the fangirl meets her idols and again with the hilarity. I’ve never met anyone famous or anything, but I’m pretty sure I would cream myself, or maybe, just feel real giddy and try not to make a complete ass of myself.

And then we get Bobby! Oh, and I so knew Bobby was evil because he wasn’t wearing the hat as he got out of the car. He. Never. Takes. Off. His. Hat. Ever. I guess you could say it was a way for the fans to know it was him driving the Impala, but sorry, I knew it was him from the pants and jacket. God I am sad.

Bobby goes on about Michael and the sword, blah blah blah. I wasn’t thinking Kate Blanchet when I saw the picture, more like the woman who played Gabriel in Constantine. She was awesome.

Sam admits to screwing up and Bobby goes ten kinds of pissed on him. Another chance to realize it wasn’t Bobby. Bobby was all “family don’t end in blood” and “family makes you miserable” in the last episode and all of a sudden he’s “lets kill him, it’ll be fun.” Me thinks I smells a demon.

This is where it gets fun. Dean finds the piece of plot convenience with his Dad’s stuff about how Michael’s sword may be in the storage area from two seasons ago and then bam! Bobby goes all demonic. This is so going to damage his psyche, what with his wife being possessed and that being the thing that starts his road to hunterdom.

The greatest person ever shows up next. MEG! Motherfucking Meg! And the actress who plays her kicks ten kinds of ass, even with the slight lisp. Come to think of it, the lisp adds a level of creepiness. She kisses him and its all gross and dark and Dean’s undercuts it with the peanut butter line. Seriously, do all demons have some sort of food fetish the minute they get up stairs?

Bobby ends up overpowering the demon, proving yet again that he more bad ass than Chuck Norris and stabs himself to save Dean. Sam jumps in and gets his ass handed to him by Meg and personally I rather enjoy seeing Sam getting his ass handed to him. What? Jared looks hot all beat up. Meg’s got a couple great lines in there too.

Meg takes off, indicating that she’s going to come back yet again, and here’s hoping for another good actress. Here’s the thing about the actress though. Did the casting director throw a dart board at a wall and get Genieve that way?

Meanwhile, poor Nicky is having nightmares. Lucifer is cruel, but I understand his reasoning. He needs to get Nick on his side. Nick begins to hear a baby crying and ends up in his child’s room. What is with Kripke and dead babies? The baby’s bed begins to ooze blood and I for one, and especially creeped out. I don’t have kids or anything, but I can’t imagine what that would be like to hear your dead child’s cries and go into their nursery and see the bed dripping with blood.

Sam and Dean leave Bobby at the ER and race to stop the demons from getting Michael’s sword, which is in John’s old storage locker apparently. I’m shocked that locker hasn’t been broken into more. In fact I’m shocked Bella didn’t keep going back and swiping shit from it before she ended up a chew toy. The demons are dead and Zachariah, or Douchebag Magee as I like to call him is already there. If it wasn’t for this actor, I would want to punch the hell out of this angel. Yeah, I know sacrilegious, but then again, I don’t believe in God or anything he stands for so who cares.

Douchebag Magee locks them in the room of doom and Zachy boy tells Dean he’s the sword. Or more importantly, the vessel with which Michael needs. Zach insults Dean some more, saying some very hurtful things. Why not just add some shit about his Dad if you really want to piss him off.

Did anyone else notice Sam in the background shifting around a lot? Jared must’ve not had enough sugar that day.

Douchebag breaks both of Sam’s legs without the aid of a tire iron, and now I’m really pissed. Only demons can beat him up. Then Zachy threatens Bobby, which is a big fuck you. Dean still refuses to be the vessel, so Zach gives him stage four stomach cancer. Yum. Again, Dean refuses, being even more badass than I thought possible. This time Zach decides to choke Sam. Apparently he knows it’s a big fetish on the show, so he does one better and removes his lungs! Wow, Zach is like my old English teacher, destroying everything in his path til he gets what he wants. Naw, maybe he’s more like a six year old.

So by this point we’re all thinking the boys are doomed and no one is going to come and save their asses and magically, Castiel shows up! Does he have like some Spidey sense in regards to Dean? Maybe he’s more like Lassie. And so a fight scene ensues and dear lord Misha looks friggin happy. “Look at me, I get to kick some ass! WHEE!”

I personally like Castiel kicking some ass, rather than just doing the gravely voice. Castiel kills two of Zach’s entourage and threatens Zach. He leaves after healing Dean and Sam of course. Castiel decides to help the boys by putting a Nokia symbol into their ribs. There was touching, so exciting. Okay, I know it wasn’t Nokia like the phone, but how funny would that be if the symbol of hiding someone was a fucking cell phone.
Castiel pays the editor and off he goes with a flap of wings.

Cut again back to Nick where he wakes up to see his wife standing there. Except its not his wife and it is not the result of alcohol. Lucifer tells him that he needs his body. This actress makes me realize that I sort of wish the roles were reversed, like instead of the wife being dead, the husband was dead and the wife becomes Lucifer. This woman makes me feel for Satan, which is all kinds of crazy. This brings up an interesting aspect. Is God right and all knowing, or is God a sadistic bastard who likes to torture people? Is God worse than Satan? If you think about it, while Satan runs Hell, he’s not exactly the one torturing, it’s the demons. This is the sort of thing that makes my brain hurt.

Nick asks if Lucifer can bring back his family, and Lucifer does the funniest thing. He tells the truth and says no that he can’t. I can’t help but feel for Satan. He doesn’t lie. What the… you figure he would say anything to get whatever he wants, but no, he tells the truth. TEAM SATAN!

So Nick agrees, there’s some bright light, and now we’re in the hospital. Bobby tells off the doctor when he informs he’ll probably never walk again. That sucks, really really sucks, but at least Bobby is still alive. Bobby is Chuck Norris. Turns out Bobby’s little rant at Sam was the demon talking.

The boys walk out and we get the heart to heart in the parking lot. Now its not at the Impala but I still count it as Dean’s tearful confession number three. Its outside and they’re only standing a few feet away from the Impala. Dean tells Sam that he can’t forgive him and that they won’t ever be the way they were and that Dean no longer trusts him. Now, Jensen can make me feel bad, but God, every time Jared cries I start up. At the end of No Rest for the Wicked, I bawled my eyes out, and I never cried, Hell, I laughed at the death scene in Titanic.

And so the episode ends with a nice pan up and Dean walking.

So, how does this episode hold up to other premiere’s of this show? Well, it didn’t have
Ruby, so its better than last season, and the whole idea of the angels and demons gunning for the Winchesters is a nice bit of fun. Because my expectations were so low, I was impressed by this ep. The sad part of this episode was seeing it being directed by someone other than Kim Manners. His death hit all the fans hard but I didn’t really realize until I didn’t see his credit.

Overall acting wise, everyone brought their a-game and I’m thoroughly impressed by the dude who will be playing Satan, but I’m still holding out a full review of his performance until after a few episodes.

If I was going to grade this episode, I’d give it a solid A-. Here’s hoping to another great season. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a few pieces of porn to write.
